Society in Jorhat

Non-governmental organization or NGO are any non profit voluntary organization that is set up on a local, national, or international level. These organizations offer different kinds of services like rehabilitation, education, and health care and help in improvement of the society at large. The volunteers of these organizations work at different levels and organize camps across the city to help the deprived, underprivileged, and weaker section of the society.

Prerona was established in the year 1992, is a non-government organization in Jorhat.Prerona is affiliated to Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy, Kolkata.

The NGO is an educational day center for children with disabilities. The main motive of the NGO is to develop the child’s maximum intellectual, physical emotional, potential and the NGO makes all possible efforts to provide the disabled children with all the care and support so that the children can meet their challenge of life.

Aims and objective of Prerona are mentioned below.

• Teaching the children the fundamentals of a good life.

• Preparing the children to play positive rolls in life.

• Providing all round educational facilities to disabled children.

• Providing speech therapy, physio therapy, and functional therapy to rehabilitate the disabled children.

• Running a vocational unit to facilitate the rehabilitation of the children.

• Organizing workshop, seminar etc. for creating awareness among common people.

• Encouraging and motivating people from community for active participation in the rehabilitation process by expanding our service.

In the year 1975, the Dagaon child welfare centre adopted the scheme for welfare of children in need of projection and care. Dagaon Child Welfare Centre was registered in the year 1960-61. Presently there are 25 numbers of children, both girls and boys. The children in the centre are brought from different  parts of Assam. The age group of children is in between 4 to 14 years. The welfare centre has taken special care for welfare of their education and health, mental and physical upliftment. The managing committee of the centre consists of 28 members, both male and female. The chief adviser of the organization is the Deputy Commissioner, Jorhat.

Presently, as the institute has not received any grant from Government for long, it is going through lot of problem now the institution is running completely on donations from and common public and various institutions and help provided by various NGOs. At present the Rotary Club, Jorhat chapter, supplies food stuff to the institution.
